In 2019 I travelled around Britain in a campervan experiencing a variety of “slow adventures”, each one becoming a chapter in the book. This self-directed project involved devising and undertaking 36 outdoor adventures, which were geographically spread throughout Britain.

The basis for each of the featured slow adventures is an immersive experience in a wild place that often, but not always, encompasses a human- or nature-powered journey and focuses on slow-paced activities that allow you to invest time in a place by either engaging with its traditions and culture, or connecting with its environment.

Here’s a selection of the featured slow adventures: bothy-to-bothy hike; barefoot walk along the South West Coast Path; learning the craft of willow weaving; dusk walk in search of bats; winter stargazing walk; solo wild camping in Wicken Fen; two-day bikepacking adventure through the Peak District National Park; coastal foraging in Studland Bay; swimming in Rydal Water in the Lake District; spoon carving; forest bathing; birdwatching on the Farne Islands; fossil hunting walk at Boggle Hole; two-day packrafting adventure in Snowdonia; horseback trail ride in the Brecon Beacons; stand-up paddleboarding along the Menai Strait; exploring the Arisaig coast on a two-day sea kayaking expedition; walking, wildlife spotting and whisky tasting on the Isle of Islay; and learning about natural navigation in Perthshire.
